The Basics On How TO Start Making Money With Adsense

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 09:20 AM CDT

Adsense is considered as one of the most powerful tool in a website publishers arsenal. It enables a person to monetize their sites easily. If used properly, it can generate a very large and healthy income for them. However if you are not using them rightly and just maximizing the income you squeeze from it, you are actually leaving a lot of money on the table. Something all people hate doing.

How you can start earning money with Adsense can be done easily and quickly. You will be amazed at the results you will be getting in such a short period of time.

Start by writing some quality content articles which are also keyword incorporated. There are a lot of people given the gift of being good with words. Writing comes easy for them. Why not make it work in such a way that you will be earning some extra cash in the process.

There are actually three steps to put into mind before you begin writing your ads and having an effective Adsense.

Keyword search. Find some popular subjects, keywords or phrase. Select the ones which you think has more people clicking through. This is actually a keyword selector and suggestion tool that some sites are offering to those who are just their Adsense business.

Writing articles. Start writing original content with keywords from the topics that you have achieved in your search. Take note that search engines are taking pride in the quality of their articles and what you will be writing should keep up with their demands.

Quality content site. Build a quality content site incorporated with Adsense ads that is targeting the subject and keywords of your articles and websites. This is where all that youve done initially will go to and this is also where they will prove their worth to you.

The proper positioning of your ads should be done with care. Try to position your ads where surfers are most likely to click on them. According to research, the one place that surfers look first when they visit a certain site is the top left. The reason behind this is not known. Maybe it is because some of the most useful search engine results are at the top of all other rankings. So visitors tend to look in that same place when browsing through other sites.

Some of those who are just starting at this business may think they are doing pretty well already and thinking that their clickthrough rates and CPM figures are quite healthy. However, there are more techniques and styles to generate more clicks to double your earnings. By knowing these techniques and working them to your advantage, you will realize that you will be getting three times more than other people who have been previously doing what they are doing.

Finally, Adsense has some excellent tracking statistics that allows webmasters and publishers to track their results across a number of site on a site by site, page by page, or any other basis you wanted. You should be aware oft his capability and make the most of it because it is one powerful tool that will help you find out which ads are performing best. This way, you can fine tune your Adsense ads and focus more on the ones being visited the most rather than those who are being ignored.

Another thing you should know. Banners and skyscrapers are dead. Ask the experts. So better forget about banners and skyscrapers. Surfers universally ignore these kinds of ad formats. The reason behind this is that they are recognized as an advert and advert are rarely of any interest thats why people ignore them.

To really start making money with Adsense, you should have a definite focus on what you wanted to achieve and how you will go about achieving them. As with any other kind of business ventures, time is needed coupled with patience.

Do not just ignore your site and your Adsense once you have finished accomplishing them. Spare some time, even an hour, making adjustments to the Adsense ads on your sites to quickly trigger your Adsense income.

Give it a try and you would not regret having gotten into Adsense in the first place.

The Dangerous Effects Of Kennel Cough

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 08:16 AM CDT

Canine cough or Kennel Cough is actually bronchitis, characterized by a harsh, hacking cough. The disease is highly contagious, transmitted by air and wind currents contaminated by cough and sneeze droplets from infected canines. Kennel cough is actually a complex of infections, chief of which is Bordetella Bronchiseptice.

Bordetella is able to render the normal respiratory tracts safeguards against infections inoperable. It disables the immune cells that normally destroy bacteria. The incubation period is 2-14 days and is characterized by a non-productive hacking cough, and more complicated cases involve a greenish eye and nasal discharge, obvious breathing difficulties, and possibly pneumonia if left untreated.

Diagnosis is usually based on the clinical signs already given, wit possible x-rays to determine the extent of lung and airway restriction and a bacterial culture may be required in extreme cases to determine what other viruses, if any, are present before treatment can begin.

Treatment consists of an antibiotic therapy and cough suppressants if the coughing remains non-productive, as coughing can persist for up to three weeks after treatment with antibiotics. Injectable and intranasal vaccinations are available, with the intranasal being more effective, since it is applied directly to the respiratory system. It usually takes 4 days to generate an immune response after the intranasal vaccination, and vaccination is not useful in a dog that already has kennel cough.

In general, kennel cough is self-limiting and is only serious for very young puppies, especially if they have never been vaccinated and senior dogs that may have a weak immune system or already poor health. Annual vaccinations are the best prevention of this disease, but due to the many organisms involved, it may not give 100% protection. When in doubt always consult your Veterinarian as soon as possible.

Always remember, if you have any questions about your dogs health, be sure to consult your veterinarian.

The Royal Pug

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 07:11 AM CDT

People love Pugs! There is something about that rogue-like face that tugs at your heart strings. This dignified toy breed is loved by royalty and commoners alike. These loving, intelligent, little clowns are extremely popular and ranked 12th out of 154 dog breeds registered by the American Kennel Club in 2005. The Pug is the largest of the Toy Dog Group weighing in a whopping 14 to 18 pounds. You can get free pictures and additional information on the Pug at Pug Pictures.

The Pug has a fascinating history and one that is somewhat controversial. No one disputes that the English painter William Hogarth owned Pugs and portrayed them many times in his paintings. For example, Hogarth's 1730 painting shows a black pug in House of Cards. Similarly everyone agrees that the Pug became the official dog of the House of Orange after saving the life of the Prince of Orange, by giving alarm at the approach of the Spaniards in 1572. Later when William of Orange went to England in 1688 to be crowned King William III, he took along several Pugs. So we know how the Pugs got from Holland to England but the controversy arises over how the breed got to Holland in the 16th century. One group of historians thinks the Pug was developed as a result of crossing several small Bulldogs. Another group thinks it is a miniature form of the rare French mastiff called the Dogue de Bordeaux. However the majority of historians think that the Pug originated in China and was brought back to 16th century Holland by the Dutch East India Company traders. This is the history that we will assume is true.

The Pug is of Chinese origin and its development seems to pre-date the Christian era. Early records indicate that there were three types of short-nosed dogs bred by the Chinese. They were the Lion Dog (probably the Shih Tzu), The Pekingese and the Foo Dog or Pug. These dogs became very popular with Chinese royalty and the Pug breed was highly prized by the Emperors of China and lived a pampered existence. In fact, ordinary citizens were not allowed to own them. However, European traders managed to obtain some Pugs and introduce them to Europe - particularly Portugal, Spain, Holland and England which were the home countries of the traders. There, these adorable little animals became the pampered favourites of many royal families. We mentioned earlier that William III and Mary introduced Pugs to Britain from Holland when they became King and Queen in 1688 and the little dogs became a favourite at the royal court. This small dog breed was also extremely popular in the European courts and was a favourite of Napoleon's wife, Queen Josephine of France. Later Queen Victoria of England succumbed to the Pugs charm and introduced several Pugs into her household. This British royalty love of Pugs continued down the line into the 20th century with the Duke of Windsor becoming a Pug owner. However by the time of Queen Victoria and her descendants, Pugs were no longer restricted to royalty. Members of the aristocracy became enamoured with Pugs as well.

Because the Pug was becoming very popular, English breeders were importing Pugs from other countries such as Russia, Austria and Holland. In 1860 British soldiers overran the Imperial palace in Peking and brought back a number of Pugs to England. The black Pug probably was imported at this time. Subsequent to this period, breeders established standards for the breed. In 1881, the Pug Dog Club of England was established and in 1883 the British Kennel Club formally recognized this breed club. By 1885, the Pug had been accepted for registration by the American Kennel Club but no national American breed club was created until 1931. By the beginning of the 20th century, large numbers of Pugs were exported to the United States from the United Kingdom. These Pugs were expensive - as they were still very much upper-class dogs.

Now we no longer have to be members of the royalty or the upper classes to own a Pug. Pugs are low maintenance dog breeds that require little grooming and get enough exercise playing indoors. They are well suited for apartment living. Pugs have a tendency to put on weight and should be taken for walks when the weather isn't too hot.

Many royal and well known people have been owned by a Pug. This started with the Chinese Emperors many centuries ago and continued right up to the Dowager Empress of China who died in 1908. Many European royal families including Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine fell under the spell of the Pug. More contemporary (and quite diverse) Pug owners included Sir Winston Churchill, Valentino, Andy Warhol and Sammy Davis Jr.

Perhaps it is time for you to consider being royally entertained by the uncommon Pug!

Whats Better Residual Income Or Passive Income?

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 05:55 AM CDT

Most of us have been taught to go to school and get an education. Ideally you graduate from high school and further your education through college or a trade school. Some go on to achieve their Masters or PHD allowing them to command more money for their time. Ultimately, one must choose what they intend to do for a career, earn a living and be productive in society. Not that you or anyone else needs a diploma in order to be successful but some would consider it to be a marker of discipline, as to whether one may finish the task or do the job required.

Residual income is known as money that is received on a regular basis from efforts already sown. Could be thought of as money that is left over from an initial purchase or ongoing installment. Its nickname or also known as (AKA) mailbox money and can be obtained by anyone, graduate or non graduate.

Usually to keep receiving residual income, one must still be active within the company or organization. Should they leave or break policy, you can expect to stop receiving any further residual money. Replacing the mailbox money with a final termination letter and ceasing any more paychecks as the residual return comes to an end.

Passive income is similar to residual income but with one major difference. With passive income you can now be an inactive party. Qualifying you to retire from your venture an yet still keep on receiving your expected paycheck. Not to be confused with a pension but giving you the freedom to maintain your preexisting standard of living, while NOT having to work for it (the paycheck) any longer.

You hear a great deal of individuals giving testimony to having a residual income, which is what most people strive to obtain and rightly so. This is to be expected when working within a home based business environment or any other self-earned income opportunity. However, if you can build your residual earnings into an ongoing passive income, you will be better off once you choose to STOP acting (or working) to get the paycheck.

Whether it be residual income or passive income, once you get a taste of either one you will most likely want to continue in this manor and grow it to unlimited heights. Allowing you to experience a lifestyle unlike others they may need to report to workplace at a certain time each day, week after week and year after year.

If you are currently representing a company or thinking of joining a company that offers residual income as a form of payment. You should check into their company policies and learn how your earned paycheck may be treated, should you choose to move on to another business opportunity. Losing a residual income after spending your time and energy creating it, could be devastating if you are not aware of its tenure ahead of time.

The Many Ways Of Making Money On The Net

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 03:28 AM CDT

Everyone has come across opportunities to make money on the net, be it starting your own business, being an affiliate member, autosurf programs, high yield investment programs (HYIP) etc. The list is endless and each program has its fair share of winners and skeptics.

Each venture has its amount of risk, be it in time, effort and finances. The norm is that the higher the risk, the better the returns. This is especially true for the autosurf and HYIP sites where the latter has sites advertising 100%+ profits in 24hrs for pretty much doing nothing except surfing or depositing, of course the risk factor has a direct correlation with the advertised returns!

The more stimulating and challenging, but equally rewarding is that of affiliate marketing, where an affiliate earns a commission for every sale made through his/her personal efforts be it through websites, emails or others. There are numerous internet gurus out there willing to share their secrets for a price to pave your road to success in the internet, teaching the various tried methods to drive traffic to your site, to reach out to millions etc. Do be careful of scams though!

The initial learning curve is steep but if you diligently follow through the steps, things do get remarkably clearer as one advances deeper.

What is involved in affiliate marketing? For starters, a small budgeting fund to secure the rights of a good program, setting up a site and advertising. Consider this as an investment to your future wealth, an exchange of a current expenditure for future easier spending when your pockets are fuller! Or take it as tuition fees for a course in internet marketing if all else fails in convincing oneself.

Within the downloads, there are many good tips and strategies for increasing your sites visibility via search engines, joining top affiliate sites, adsense, profiting from ebay, sales letters etc. effectively the how tos to optimize returns from your site(s).

Every journey must start from somewhere, be it simply opening a door to take the first step or hitting that Enter key on your keyboard. Cash will not simply drop into your lap although the process has been simplified by these internet gurus.

Currently, one such program has an attractive web site builder package included when one signed up as a VIP member. For those daunted by the prospect of having to design and build a site, this will take a load off ones mind.

Keep at it and keep an open mind, experimenting as you move along and the rewards will be more than the effort invested!

See the site results of the webby-building offer : http://www.rightstowealth.com

The Journey of a Thousand miles (translate that to cash) begins with a Single Step.

My Puppy Chews A Lot - Mostly On Me

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 01:31 AM CDT

Puppies who chew are normal. Chewing is a natural and necessary puppy behavior. Puppies at about four months of age are more prone to chewing because this is when they usually start teething. Other dogs that chew, especially when you are not at home, may be suffering from separation anxiety. Separation anxiety requires an entire new behavior treatment plan. In this newsletter, I want to give you a few tips for your typical, normal-behaving puppy chewer!

Some things you can do is try to teach your puppy not to chew inappropriate items. You can sit on the floor with him, casually place an object before him like a shoe, or a pencil (something he has chewed on inappropriately). As puppy approaches the object, give a firm "No," and replace the item with appropriate chew toy. When puppy takes the appropriate chew toy, praise him. You might even offer him a treat to try and reenforce the appropriate behavior and also.....that chewing on treats is alright too.

Have a variety of chew toys on hand. Give him no more than 3 or 4 chew toys at a time. Rotate the chew toys to provide variety and to help stimulate interest. Puppies can be compared to children who enjoy a new toy or returning to a toy they have not played with in a while.

Keep plenty of Bitter Apple Spray on hand and use it on spots where you find puppy has chewed or is about to chew. This has been the absolute best trick I have ever found in keeping puppies/dogs away from objects I don't want them chewing on.

My Puppy Bites my Hands When we Play!

If you have ever watched puppies playing together or moms playing with their puppies, you will notice how they nip and bite each other sometimes to the point of what sounds like a blood curling scream.....Very Normal Behavior, however. Not so pleasant though when puppy plays with you and attempts the same kind of antics. You will need to teach puppy not to play biting games with you. Try screaming: "Ouch!" Walk away from her for several minutes. You don't want to give her attention for this behavior. You want to plainly tell her "THAT HURTS," and I do not like it!!! If she just barely touches your skin with a little nip, just gently say "No." Try feeding her treats straight from your hand and do not throw them on the floor or leave them out for her to nibble on. Sort of like, puppies/dogs will not bite the hands that feed them, most usually, unless they have some kind of severe psychological disorder. You can also grab her mouth, hold it together firmly and say "NO BITE."

Twitter, Identi.ca and July 4th

Posted: 04 Jul 2008 03:39 PM CDT

First of all, if you’re American, and you’re reading this - I have to ask why?  The web is like a ghost town today.  There isn’t much going on via Twitter.  FriendFeed is unusually slow, and about six or so of our two trillion readers showed up to leave a comment today.  It’s July 4! Independence Day!  Go out and have a brew and a hot dog!

For all our non-American friends and readers, and the six US readers who have nothing else better to do, Sean P. Aune and I have recorded a special episode of Mashable Conversations today.  We scoured the web and couldn’t find a guest to come in today, so we reverted to a topic that had particularly irked us from the week past - the bizzarre assumption by some in the blogosphere that Identi.ca is the natural successor to Twitter.

I won’t steal the show’s thunder, but Sean and I puzzle over this idea and try to figure out exactly why this is being said. It’s a short episode, so go ahead and watch before you throw on your swimwear and jump in the pool this afternoon.

You can leave your comments on this topic in the comments for inclusion on future episodes.

Those in your feed reader will need to download the episode or hit the blog for the embed.

Never Miss an Episode! (feeds fixed!)

10+ Blogging Politicians Who Still Don’t Say What They Mean

Posted: 04 Jul 2008 12:34 PM CDT

Place the words "blog" or "social media" and "politician" in the same line, and you almost invariably conjure images of a scandal. Or at least a messy exchange between writer/publisher and politician. Much less often are you likely to consider them a team. Politician bloggers? Turns out those terms are not mutually exclusive. They're more prevalent than the average citizen might believe.

Of course, it would be naive to assume the full supply of politician bloggers past and present crafted that kind of output all by themselves. Aids certainly play key roles in those respects. But even taking the spokesmen and spokeswomen into account, the list of government officials on a global spectrum invested in social media to varying degrees is pretty remarkable.

Blogs of myriad stripes and sizes are more or less a natural addition to many political campaigns of our day. Barack Obama, who entered the national headlines in the last year and a half, has done his share of networking on the Web. The candidate has constructed a successful social network custom fit for maximum campaign effect. His Twitter history is something to note. The network-effect of some of his live and pre-produced videos has garnered north of a millions views each. Altogether, the Senator’s use of numerous Web-based services is no doubt unprecedented. His promise to appoint a “chief technology officer” for the Executive branch if he is elected has gone down well with the blogger class, too.

As for others in the political sphere in America? Former senator John Edwards introduced his bid for the 2008 Democratic nomination via YouTube, and during his campaign presented an official blog to visitors of his website. Others naturally followed suit.

Some elected officials in the US not seeking the seat in the Oval Office, but posting to the Web all the same:

John Conyers, House Representative from Michigan (D)

Mike Conaway, Rep. from TX (R)

And John Fritchey, Rep. from IL (D)

Internationally, activity has picked up among politicos in the last few years. Here are some folks making headlines beyond America’s borders:

The UK

Across the Atlantic, British MP Alan Johnson was known for Twittering feverishly while campaigning to be deputy leader of the Labour party. He now maintains a website for his position as MP for Kingston Upon Hull West and Hessle. It’s a bit of a bore, however, with basic information describing news and things from his constituency. Most visitors will tend to move on quickly.

David Cameron, the opposition leader looking to take Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s job, is known for putting out video clips in podcast form since about 2006. A Conservative Party member through and through, Cameron now offers a litany of campaign update and media uploads to satisfy the well-connected. Meaning Net-connected, not, you know, his real pals.

Scandinavia

There’s one high profile Danish politician who stands out as having embraced at least one Web-based medium. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen is his name, and Facebook is his virtual platform of choice. You’ll see regular mini-feed posts affixed with the man’s byline, and he even occasions the odd get-together with “friends” to bridge the online world with the physical one. Some months ago, Rasmussen spent a day taking a casual jog with about 100 other runners.

Middle East

He’s drawn the ire of numerous officials in Europe. And he’s no golfing partner of the White House’s current chief occupant. His general fanbase among heads of state worldwide isn’t particularly long, really. But he’s a blogger. Yes, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad first optioned to put up a personal blog sometime in August 2006 - months after the Iranian government added a blog filter to the IT Ministry) - and has since posted numerous messages to be read (and replied to, with ample mediation and filtration) by a global audience. The feed has been idle for several months now, though, so a yearly visit would likely suffice.

South Asia:

Further east still, the ruling party in Malaysia had an abrupt change of heart about blogging. For a while it was quite opposed to the medium. This past April, however, the party began requiring that a number of its candidates establish blogs. This went for all party types seeking “youth posts” in government.

How to Live Blog a Conference

Posted: 04 Jul 2008 05:42 AM CDT

pete-gets-scobleizedWe attend a lot of events here at Mashable, and we want to share what we learn there with you as quickly as possible. With lighter laptops and more people blogging, it’s fairly common to hear the clattering of keyboards during conferences and live events. As a result, the end-of-day recap post has been replaced by intermittent updates throughout the event. Enter live blogging, a fancy term for taking notes during an event and publishing them in real time.

Live blogging allows those that aren’t at the event to participate remotely, and it also helps facilitate a conversation among attendees by giving them access to content they might have missed as well as a place where they can discuss it.

If you’ve never actually live blogged before, then it might sound cumbersome or even distracting. In fact, live blogging provides a ton of value to your blogging community and allows you to affirm your commitment to fostering conversations in your industry. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to experiment with some new techniques.

To help expand your live blogging prowess, we pulled together some top tips to get you started:

Prepare Before You Go

Live blogging is easy, but you need to make sure you’re prepared ahead of time.

-Check Internet access: check to see whether the venue has Internet access. If it does, determine whether this is provided by the conference organizers or if you have to pay for it. Many convention centers and hotels still charge event organizers a hefty fee to for wireless Internet access, so organizers will often opt not to purchase it for attendees. If that’s the case, pick up a wireless aircard or modem from your mobile carrier. It’s an important tool in your blogging arsenal and a worthwhile investment if you spend a lot of time traveling, as it virtually guarantees wireless Internet access anywhere you go.

-Consult the event schedule: determine which sessions you’re going to attend, keeping your audience in mind. Decide which speakers will appeal to the people that read your blog and what session topics will provide a unique perspective they will appreciate.

-Post early: Inform your audience that you will be live blogging so they know to expect regular updates during the day, which will improve your site’s traffic, attract new readers and provide fresh content.

Choose Your Platform
There are a few different ways you can live blog. You can draft a post in your blog editing software of choice and publish it as you normally do. You can also use software like CoverItLive. The benefit of CoverItLive is that it’s pretty intuitive and the robust feature set allows you to make your blog more interactive will polls, images and media in real time.

Another option is to stream live video segments from the event using your computer’s webcam. Both Seesmic and uStream.tv are good options here. Ian Lurie from Conversation Marketing has some great tips on how to stream video with ease.

liveblog-digg

conference-audienceDuring the Event
Now that you’ve equipped yourself with the right tools and set the expectations of your readers, it’s time to get to work. But what the heck do you actually do? This is pretty subjective, but if you’re taking notes, only share the most interesting and relevant information. In most cases, this means avoiding the play-by-play (i.e. “Speaker X walks up to the podium, clears throat and opens with quip about your mom.”) in favor of more salient points (”Speaker X says trust is the most important factor in determining marketing success. Jack from Company Y challenges this.). Your readers really only want to hear the highlights. If there are case studies, try and document them as best you can. If statistics are shared, those are always of interest.

Live Blogging Alternative - Twitter
Suppose you don’t have a blog or you don’t want to lug your computer from presentation to presentation. You can still participate in live event conversations using Twitter. Before you go, conduct a quick keyword search on Summize for the name of the conference (i.e. SummerMash Seattle). Find out who’s talking about it and who plans to attend. You can then follow their updates during the event via your mobile phone by sending a text message to 40404 in the US (21212 from Canada; +44 7624801423 everywhere else) with the message, “follow “[USERNAME]“.

You can also share your own updates from the event by setting up a Twitter account ahead of time. Next, find out what the hashtag is for the event. A hashtag is an agreed upon abbreviation that conference attendees use to denote which Twitter updates are related to a specific event.

Conclusion
Live blogging isn’t hard, but it does take some thoughtful consideration to do it right and to do it well. If you have excellent examples of live blogging or additional tips from your own experience, please share them below.

A Gift Basket for Faraway Family Members

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 12:24 AM CDT

I know very well what it's like to have family who live far away. When I was growing up, my grandparents and aunts/uncles and cousins lived across the ocean. When I had my own kids, their grandparents and aunts/ uncles lived on the other side of the country. Now that my sister has 2 small children, the youngest of whom I've never met, this being far away has hit me again. How can we show far away family, especially when children are involved, that we want to be close and stay connected?

We could design a gift basket for family members who live far away, just to say we care. We would put into it several mementos that make the distance between us seem smaller.

If we have young children, we could send grandparents a digital picture frame. In case you're wondering what a digital picture frame is; it is a device about the size and shape of a picture frame that has a LCD screen. The screen displays multiple photos in a slide show format, and it connects to the Internet via the phone line to download new pictures and information to display. You use your computer to upload photos to a website and every day the frame uses the phone line to connect to the website and download any new photos. This is an ideal way to send digital photos of the family to grandparents who lack a computer and/or the skills to use one.

We could also include a DVD, or a video depending on the equipment we and they have, of some recent activity; perhaps our child scoring a goal at soccer or performing in a recital, or even just a family picnic or something like that. Photos are great, certainly better than nothing, but they just don't show you what the child is really like as well as video does. They don't give you as much of a feeling of being there as a movie does. We could also include a tape (either audiotape or videotape) of our child giving the recipient a special message.

Of course we could always send regular photos too. One idea to make a photo special is to cut out the shape of the children (the important part) and have it glued onto a plastic block so that it stands upright by itself. Another idea is to frame the photo in a magnetic frame that is suitable for the holiday so that it is easy to put on the fridge. I have one on my fridge right now that is a heart frame for Valentines Day. You can often get these at places like Target. We could include a picture the child has drawn or painted, or even a small thing the child has made himself if the child likes to do crafts.

Of course, most of these ideas are not just for children and grandparents, although I know that the time when you feel the farthest away from your family is when either you are a child away from grandparents, or you are away from a small child, especially a grandchild. These ideas can be applied to any faraway family members. When family members move away is when they most need to know that we're thinking of them. A gift basket would be a great way to reassure them of this.

Tracy Crowe loves to feel connected and closer to her family.

Grab The Right Golf Training Aid And Drastically Improve Your Golf Game!

Posted: 04 Jul 2008 11:16 PM CDT

The avid present day Golfer needs to improve the technicalities if the caliber of the game is to improve and adeptness at the game is to be attained. The technical expertise is attained more by using Golf Teaching Aids rather than increasing the time invested on the greens. The Golf Teaching Aids are more than mere gadgets rather they are a boon when used under critical observation of an efficient instructor. The flaw in technique could well be unnoticed by even the most discerning of Golfers and it takes a scientifically tempered Teaching Aid to diagnose and manage the flaw which could well make a significant difference to the individual Handicap per se. The aids help visualize and experience the flaw which could well be effectively neutralized with practice and modifications based on grips and swings. The commonest and inarguably the most effective of Golf Teaching Aids could be the Chair, mirror and the Impact Bag.

THE GOLF IMPACT BAG

An effective game of Golf depends predominantly on consistency in ball impact. The Swing, Stance and the Grip could be excellent but if the Ball impact consistency is at fault the best of Golfers are known to falter. Many a errant shot could well be due to a thin or a fat shot resulting in the Golf ball going at a higher trajectory than expected with the club in hand. This is best neutralized by using the Wonder Teaching Aid of contemporary Golf The Golf Impact Bag.

The Golf Impact Bag fundamentally being simple to use. The Golf Impact Bag being positioned in place of the Golf Ball and the swing being taken normally. The impact position would evidently return with increased resistance which would help the golfer experience the feel and help correct the shot. The position of choice being wherein the lead arm and the shaft are in a perfect straight line. Concurrently the hand is just ahead of the golf club head and the Impact Bag helps enhance the feel at the time of the impact so as to facilitate correction. The descending force at the point of impact is best achieved in this position considering that there is a lag between the lead arm and the shaft.

THE INNOVATION

The Golf Impact Bag is available at all golf shops and is easy to procure the more ingenious could well prepare the Impact bag at home with considerable ease. The need being an old duffel bag and plenty of old towels.

THE INCONSISTENCY SYNDROME

The most adept of golfers could well have an inconsistency of shots primarily due to standing tall at the start of the swing which leads to loss of power and is invariably an outcome of the loss of angle of the spine during the backswing. This is best corrected by using the Chair. The tail end of the spine is rested against the chair while taking the swing ensuring that the contact is maintained throughout the swing. This would evidently maintain the angle of the spine throughout the swing.

The perfect game of Golf is attained with considerable ease by those who invest judiciously in a scientific mix of time and Golf Teaching Aids the wonder products of present day Golf and Greens.

Just Some Other News…

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 11:25 AM CDT

Looks like Rockhopper won’t be having trouble with Icebergs anymore. His new cannon on the Mast will take care of that. RH will be leaving July 7th, so check out my Finding Guide if you need help finding him.

Penguin Mail should be here this month. Here are some details.

New Playercard Feature Update

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 10:11 AM CDT

The Club Penguin Team has produced a much better for the upcoming playercard feature. It’s default layout shows all the items, which will be convenient and easy for those without heap-loads of clothing.

As for the members with tons of clothing, you can jump right to the particular type of item you’re looking for with this new feature. This new feature will include the ‘clear outfit’ button so you can start all over on your penguin’s clothing style.

All of the CPIP features will be ready for launch in a couple of weeks.

Want to see Fever’s playercard? Click here to view the slideshow! My penguin Watex had a little less, but they were older items.

EventVue: For Your Own Personal Face Book [video]

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 09:08 PM CDT

For today’s Mashable Conversations, we sat down with EventVue’s CEO Rob Johnson. They run a service that is used in connection with major meet-up and conference style events that allows you to actually know who you’ll meet before you meet them.  Their service, at least the central part of it, reminds me of a project that Pete assigned to part of the staff shortly before he was on his way to San Francisco the first time.

He had been online as a moving force, as well as participant in the general discussion, with a wide cross-section of the Web 2.0 and social media industry.  Having been based in Scotland up until that point, he only had a vague idea what most everyone looked like, and wanted the staff to put together a personal face book of sorts so that when he gallivanted across town, he would know who to look for.

Rob Johnson noticed this trend wasn’t isolated, as lots of folks tend to put these together before attending major industry events, and save them to their palmtop devices so that they may recognize key players while they socialize.  This was the opportunity in the marketplace that EventVue exploits, amongst other things.

We here at Mashable are utilizing this technology for our Summer Mash events, as well.  By registering for our events, you’ll recieve an invitation to learn more about your fellow attendees and see their shining faces before you attend.

You can download the full episode here or watch via the embedded player below on today’s Mashable Conversations.

Discussion
In this episode, Sean, Rob and I also discuss the ICANN’s decision to open up TLD registration to all folks with 100k and an idea. You can leave your thoughts below for inclusion in future Mashable Conversations episodes.

Wish List: 8 Ways to Improve Google Maps

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 03:22 PM CDT

Google Maps logo

Remember when people used to say “MapQuest it” if they didn’t want to explain to someone how to get somewhere? That phrase stuck around for quite a while after Google Maps was introduced even as MapQuest’s marketshare eroded. But lately it seems all I ever hear is “Google it.” Google Maps has seen a lot of improvements since its launch to be sure, but for everyone out there Googling their Independence Day destination, here are eight ways Google could make the experience better.

Travel suggestions

Rather not spend all your time with family? Sure you can search for bookstores in Omaha or fishing holes in Florida, but Google Maps should take your previous search history, figure out what interests you and automatically suggest points of interest. Unless you really want to catch up with Aunt Mildred.

Offline mode

roadtripPicture this: You’re on a family road trip, tunes blaring, wind blowing with the windows rolled down, and your printed directions fly away never to be seen again. What now? Your navigator pulls out her laptop only to find there is no 3G in Yosemite, but thanks to Google Gears-enabled Maps, she knows right where to direct you.

Make it more social

Location is one underutilized aspect of social networking. Services like Brightkite and Loopt are ready to eat Google’s lunch by taking advantage of location, but Google has a wealth of data it could plot: geocoded photos and videos, datelined news items that get shared in Google Reader, and soon, the real-time location of every 3G iPhone-toting soul in the world. A lot of this data can already be seen on Google Maps through mash-ups, but all of this location data should be rolled into one great location-aware social network.

More options for MyMaps

When Google launched the MyMaps feature in Google Maps last year, it was seen as the death knell for a lot of sites that had been making nifty mash-ups with Google’s API. mymapsNow anyone can make a map without knowing a lick of Javascript, PHP or even HTML. If all you want to make is a simple map of where to see fireworks, MyMaps probably has you covered. But what if it’s a map of independent coffee shops serving up free Wi-Fi that you want? You’ll probably want to include a common set of information about each coffee shop including whether they serve Danish, what kind of music they play and how good the chai lattes are on a scale from one to five. You could include all of that information as text in the description for each coffee shop, but that wouldn’t make for a very easily searchable database. Rather, Google needs to include some basic support for building better lists if it truly wants to make all the world’s information findable.

Map quantitative data

Another way to make MyMaps betters would be to include a way to map quantitative data such as household income, broadband penetration or any of the other demographic data organizations collect. Again, this can be done with Google’s API, but the masses are missing out.

Layers, layer, layers

Google’s recent addition of a terrain map is nice if you’re looking for a peak to climb, but there’s no reason to stop there. Users should be able to turn map features on and off. Don’t want to see county roads? Gone. And there is no end to the layers Google could add. Google Maps should get political and add county, congressional district and city divisions for the civicly minded. And how about more live data? Like the real-time location of flights and Amtrak trains.

GPS data

Ever taken a road trip and wanted to share a map of where you’ve been? Google Maps won’t let you do it. The service should accept GPX data from GPS devices for this very reason. And think, you could share that map on the yet-to-be-named Google Maps-based social network.

English please

I hate to be one of those people, but is it too much to ask for English labels on foreign places ?

Movable Type Plugin Connects FriendFeed Comments With Your Blog

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 01:48 PM CDT

In case you haven't noticed, there is a lot of discussion going on over at FriendFeed. This has created a mini-crisis for those of us that blog professionally – a lot of the best conversation is taking place off-site.

But developers are quickly coming to the rescue, and the latest is Mark Carey, who has developed a plugin for Movable Type bloggers that allows you to import comments from FriendFeed to your blog. Even better, it scans FriendFeed for all instances of your blog post and grabs the comments. For example, when this post is published, not only will it hit our RSS feed, but it will hit my FriendFeed account, Pete's FriendFeed, Mashable's Twitter account, and hopefully be shared by a few people on Google Reader. With the new plugin (if we were using Movable Type, but I digress), comments made on any of those items in FriendFeed would show up right here on this post.

On the other side of the equation, if you leave a comment on a blog that has the plugin installed, you can select to have that comment appear on FriendFeed as well, allowing you to participate in two communities for the price of one.

For bloggers using other platforms, a few other solutions have already been developed for dealing with “the friendfeed issue.” Disqus and Plaxo hooked up recently to enable comments to flow back and forth between the two services, while Glenn Slaven has developed a plugin that WordPress bloggers can install to bridge comments with FriendFeed.

Find Out Where The Locals Eat [The Startup Review]

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 12:37 PM CDT

Editor's Note: If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion in "The Startup Review" series, please see the details here.

STARTUP DETAILS:

Company Name: Where The Locals Eat

20-word Description: Where The Locals Eat is an interactive restaurant guide which spotlights the top 100 local restaurants in the largest 50 cities in America.

CEO’s Pitch: To get the inside scoop on where to eat when you travel or to find new restaurants in your city, check out Where The Locals Eat. Pointing you to the nation's very best restaurants, from haute cuisine to cheap eats. Where The Locals Eat, free-of-charge and fully searchable by city, category and restaurant name, contains detailed information on thousands of restaurants and provides online reservations, constantly updated foodie news and mapping of restaurants by neighborhood. Look for the new Where The Locals Eat iPhone application as well (July 11th) which will deliver this information directly to users' iPhones using GPS and allowing them to rate, make lists, and more. Because when you travel, don't you want to eat like a local?

Mashable’s Take: The number of restaurants in the United States is immense. Even if you were to take a peek at the list of locations within, say, 50 big and medium-sized cities, you'd likely be overwhelmed. Without a guide, that is.

Where The Locals Eat is a name more polysyllabic than some might prefer, but it does the trick. If nothing else, it’s entirely straightforward. The premise of the service is simple. You're given a list of 50 cities, in which lots of people live and travel to. For each city, you're shown a list of about 100 restaurants deemed the best in their respective categories. This goes for everything from pizza and/or burger joints, steakhouses, delicatessens, sushi bars, and vegetarian haunts. It's like Zagat, but with a broader national spread and less focus on each individual metropolis. Which would likely appeal to people not wanting to think too much about the selection process. Some just want food fast, with as few complications or details as possible. Where The Locals Eat serves that market ably.

As for the site's structure, it's well made. Tidy and intuitive, it's built to serve users on the desktop and on the go. Want to map out a single location, or perhaps an entire list? You can. Driving directions can also be had. Users can even have location info sent to their mobile devices. An iPhone application will soon be added to service's feature set. A launch is scheduled for July 11 to coincide with Apple's own planned product and service releases. All said, the package looks complete.

If you'd like to read up on restaurant news in a particular city, there is an adjunct blog called iEat that covers the array of cities listed in the guide.

Regator Simplifies Media Consumption [Invites]

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 12:03 PM CDT

There's a new "next-generation" blog aggregator emerging onto the scene today. It's called Regator. It's come out of Atlanta, Georgia. And its builders, a trio of entrepreneurs that include Scott Lockhart (co-founder), Chris Turner (co-founder), and Kimberly Turner (editorial director), have managed to deliver a quite impressive piece of kit.

You might like the green theme topped with "Reg," the site's mildly tech-savvy mascot. You might not. But those of you fortunate to get hold of a private beta account, you're almost certain to enjoy its toolset, presentation, and overall completeness as a ready-to-go feed-reading service.

If you give it a few minutes, you'll see that everything within Regator's framework appears well thought out. There's the main central column where data from blogs is presented in introductory portions. You're given several lines to read, and if you want to follow through to the original source, you may. And the reading experience is really superb given the speed at which information is refreshed.

But culling text from various sources, placing them into categories, and allowing users to determine the popularity of blog posts isn't all Regator does. It is able to play back audio and video as well, which is a great convenience as many media hungry consumers well know. If you do a quick browse of the service's 'Entertainment' section, you'll see just how well media buttons within Regator function.

Click an audio track and a slim bar of options emerges the bottom of the browser window, showing its progress. You can skim a track, raise or lower volume, access a playlist of previously chosen tracks, view the source where the music resides, and even make a purchase if so inclined. An Amazon link is shown, taking you to the retailer's CD store, not the Amazon MP3 downloads center, which might be the more natural route to take. But that's a minor point to make. Overall, Regator's utility works as it should. Video playback operates similarly easily, too, albeit in a pop-up window rather than the media player at the foot of the page.

This may not be a perfect juxtaposition to make here, but I would equate Regator with Digg. Both feature lots of different information, after all. Both sport a wide variety of data, though clearly in different ways. However, I would say Regator has Digg best in the way that it pulls information from blogs, regardless of user submissions. Yes, those posts can be ranked and popularized and de-popularized, as with Digg. (Digg, admittedly, is considerably stronger in that regard, too.) But Regator has a catalog of feeds put in place, so a user can really develop a sort of routine. You can get a number of uses out of the service, in other words. It can be a little social, it can be personal (with your own MyRegator page), it can be taken simply as a standard pool of a variety of information. Whatever you like.

A lot of what makes Regator so good is, as I mentioned earlier, its immediate utility. Sign up, and you're browsing the blogosphere. That easy. No need to build up a list of blogs from scratch. Just toy around. See what you like. Familiarize yourself with it. There are over 3,000 "hand-selected blogs" listed; The convenience factor here is everything.

Alright, enough praising. If you'd like to give Regator a try, the site's creators are offering an invitation to 100 Mashable readers to test the private beta. Just visit the Regator homepage, and where an invite code is required on the registration form, type 'mashable'.

Myplaylist Launches a Lyrics Service

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 09:15 AM CDT

Flickr/ MP3 mashup service Myplaylist has launched Myplaylist Lyrics, a service that combines lyrics into a mini playlist built for each song.

As a user searches for a song, Myplaylist searches the Internet for the images and the MP3 that is best associated with this song (finding the best quality version), then compiles all this with lyrics, offering a comprehensive mashup of content for that song.

Key features include search for a quote from the lyrics to find the song; continuous play, as one song finishes the system will find and play another similar; boolean search so use of “” for more specific results and did you mean? (spelling errors - suggests correct name)

Myplaylist is one of the smaller competitors in the streaming mp3 playing space, but its unique mashup of Flickr imagery and song has won a loyal fan base. The lyrics service, relying on the broader internet instead of a central database, offers a surprisingly solid lyric delivery service, and what better accompaniment for lyrics than great imagery and the song searched for playing in the background.

Again, One Clueless Person Destroys the Privacy Of Millions

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 07:15 AM CDT

When you first read about the Google-Viacom lawsuit, you never thought that it would affect you directly, did you? Think again.

Judge Louis L. Stanton, presiding over the federal court for the Southern District of New York, has ordered Google to give Viacom the IP addresses and other data about the users who watched YouTube videos, either on YouTube itself or embedded on a third party website. If you want to get depressed further, read the entire document here.

Let me tell you, in the shortest possible terms, what this means. It means you. Unless you’ve been extra careful to only watch non-copyrighted videos on YouTube (yeah, right), Viacom could sue you. No, it’s even worse: they could actually win.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has an analysis which shows that this decision is in violation of the VPPA (Video Privacy Protection Act). However, and interestingly enough, the court denied Viacom’s request of YouTube’s source code, which means that the big company - Google - got protected, but the little guy - us - got screwed.

The court justified its decisions partly by what the folks at Google had written in a blog post a while ago. An IP address is not personal data; it cannot identify you without any additional information, they argued. Google has stabbed itself in the foot with that post, but even without going into its analysis, I can tell you the following:

a) Viacom wants these IP addresses precisely because they want to be able to identify the users. Why else would they ask for them?
b) Yes, the IP address is only one piece of the puzzle. YouTube login info - which Google also must produce to Viacom - is another. I bet those two are enough for full identification of many users. But even if they’re not, asking for this data and saying “they’re not enough to identify the user” is completely stupid, because little by little Viacom will get the rest of the data they need - from the ISPs, for example. It’s like saying: hey, you: I’m not going to ask you for your personal data, only your first name and the city you live in, please.

I think I’m not alone here when I say screw you, Viacom. Take your lousy videos and watch them yourselves. Slap a nice watermark on each one so I can make sure I never watch one again. In the meantime, can someone make sure that judges who probably don’t have a clue about what an IP address is don’t get assigned to cases like this? Thank you.

Unluckiest Guy on Earth Gets 44,000 Spam Emails Every Day

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 06:13 AM CDT

And you thought you had a spam problem? Colin Wells, Orange customer who works as Workshop Foreman for Stagecoach buses receives over 44,000 unsolicited emails every day, which amounts to 16 million “v1ag3a c1al1s” style emails per year. Ouch.

The data comes from UK anti-spam software company ClearMyMail which announced UK’s top 5 most spammed email accounts under its protection. These unlucky customers receive somewhere between 3,900 and 44,000 spam emails daily. Wells, for example had spent nearly 2 hours every day deleting spam. Apparently, no one has told him that when a porn/warez/torrent site asks you for your e-mail, you do not give your real email account, you use Mailinator or a similar service instead. Doh!

Besides, receiving so much spam can be a good thing. If Spamlets ever rises in popularity, this guy is sure to be a star.

So Long, Tweeterboard, We Hardly Knew Ye

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 05:37 AM CDT

If you’ve been frequenting Tweeterboard, an application that analyzed Twitter conversations and spewed out a list of 100 most influential Twitter users, you must have noticed that the site now sports merely a message that says “Tweeterboard is done.”

Gene Smith explains why he shut down the service on his blog; it boils down to “I no longer have the time, energy, interest or technical abilities to maintain it.” Pity, it was a nifty little tool.

Google Talk Comes to the iPhone…And It’s Kinda Useless

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 02:50 AM CDT

Fanfare: Google Talk is now available for the iPhone. It features a snazzy interface (is it possible to create a shoddy interface for the iPhone?) and almost everything you can do on the desktop client: create a quicklist of favorite users, search, and manage multiple conversations at the same time.

There’s one problem, though, which makes the entire thing almost useless. The official quote goes like this:

There are some differences from using Google Talk on your computer. For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on your iPhone, the application needs to be open in your Safari browser. When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your status will be changed to “unavailable” and your Google Talk session will be restarted when you return.

Therefore, you can’t have Google Talk sit idly in the back and have a conversation every now and then - which is the default pattern of usage for most users, I believe. This limitation is due to Apple’s silly “apps can’t run in the background” rule, the official explanation of which goes along the lines of “we can’t let people do that, it would consume too much battery.” I’ve warned about the problem before, the most obvious issue is with IM clients such as Google Talk, but I’m sure there are other types of applications that will suffer from it.

All this, of course, is supposed to be solved by Apple’s push notification service. Let’s hope that a) it works well and b) it’s available in all parts of the world, not just the US.

Deciding On Golf Clubs

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 05:32 AM CDT

When you decide on a set of golf clubs to use, it can be quite simple as you desire. There are the few individuals however, that make it difficult. You can either go to a store with a golf pro or go to a garage sale for used clubs. You can even check with the pro at a local municipal course, but your chances of choosing a set of golf clubs with the most suitable size of grip, loft lie and the other accessories involved in golf club fitting are very slim.

If youre a golf novice, then its good to keep in mind that you may find that this game is not your cup of tea. You ought to start out with rental clubs at the local driving range. Most driving ranges have rental clubs. Therefore you should go out and hit golf balls with the rental clubs. Once you make the decision that you still enjoy the game of golf after hitting a few golf balls, then youre ready to purchase your own golf clubs.

As a novice, you should find inexpensive clubs to use as an interim set during the adjustment period. Youre learning the game of golf, so you dont want to make any big decisions on the type of golf clubs to purchase yet. If you stay attuned to whats going on around the golf course or driving range, you may hear of an individual who has a set that he or even she is willing to sell. You may even ask if the individual has any information on golf clubs that could be sold cheaply. You can try classified ads of the weekend newspaper or take a look at garage sales that may have golf clubs for sale. Of course, you can even check the Internet, which is by far the fastest-growing market in golf. You may even desire to become your very own private investigator as you hunt down the best purchase you can discover. If you purchase inexpensive golf clubs now, then youll allow plenty of time for the big purchase.

Its advisable to try out all of golf clubs. Golf clubs consist of ones with steel shafts, graphite shafts, big-headed clubs, investment-cast golf clubs, forge golf clubs, cavity-backed golf clubs and others. This is your experimental stage, so its best to try different ones and have fun. You can even ask your friends if you can try out their golf clubs on the range.

Veterinarians Set Record Straight

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 01:55 AM CDT

Most pet owners have become very educated about their pet and the health of their pet. Still, there are many others who tend to believe in the old wives tales and myths that have been passed around for some time now. Im sure most of you have heard at least one, and probably more, of the following myths. Veterinarians at the American Animal Hospital Association(AAHA) have since enlightened us to many of those tales and to the facts concerning some of the most commonly heard myths.

Myth: Yeast will prevent fleas from feasting on your pet.

Fact: There is still no scientific proof that yeast prevents fleas, though it is a good source of B vitamins.

Myth: Pets(dogs/cats) will get worms if they drink milk.

Fact: This is no more true for your pets than it is for you! Pets do lose their tolerance for milk early, however, around the age of 6 -8 weeks of age due to their loss of lactose(an enzyme essential for the digestion of milk products).

Young animals may have diarrhea if they drink milk due to the above factors. Still, most puppies are infected with worms through maternal milk or during pregnancy which is why treating both mother and litters for worms is so important.

Myth: If a purebred bitch inadvertently becomes pregnant by a mix breed dog, this disallows her ability to have purebred puppies in future litters.

Fact: The only puppies that will be mixed breed are the ones resulting from this breeding. If bred with a purebred mate in the future, those puppies will also be purebred.

Myth:Dogs and cats should be allowed one heat cycle, or one litter of pups, before being spayed.

Fact: A major benefit of being spayed may be lost if this is allowed to happen!

Research shows that animals spayed before their first heat have a significantly smaller chance of developing future health problems such as breast cancer.

Myth: Dogs which scoot their rear ends on the ground have worms.

Fact: Sometimes dogs having tapeworms may exhibit this behavior, though the overwhelming majority of animals doing this have inflamed or overly full anal sacs.

The anal sacs are structures located on either side of the anus which when closed up cause an itching or burning sensation in your pets anal area. As a result the animal scoots its rear on the ground to try and relieve this situation.

Myth: Any dog having a black mouth is a purebred.

Fact: Though some purebred dogs have a blackened color inside their mouth, this is no indication of any other animal being a purebred. Pigmentation is the only reason for this color, caused by a substance called melanin. Indeed, this substance called melanin is responsible for birthmarks in humans and also the lack of, or availability of, such skin tones as a tan. This color alone is not indicative of a purebred dog.

Myth:Puppies need calcium supplements for strong bones and erect ears.

Fact: If you are feeding your animals a diet that is nutritionally complete, then no further supplements are needed. Too much calcium, in fact, can be harmful to your dog.

Great Ideas For Hamster Cages

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 06:04 AM CDT

It is really great to have a hamster as your pet. They are very cute and they like to chew different things but especially cloth. While cats and dogs are allowed to walk freely around your home, you don't let your hamster out of its cage. You do need to have a hamster cage in case you own one of these lovable pets. The cages come in many different shapes and sizes and have a variety of features for your hamster.

The most popular shape for hamster cages is rectangular. Because of this particular shape the hamster cages are usually put in a corner, so that they wouldn't stand in the center of the room and be on your way. When you feel like playing with your pet, you can easily take the hamster out but when you have stopped playing with it and are leaving the room it is good to make sure you have put it in its cage.

You should pay attention to your hamster's security because if it escapes from its cage, it might become a prey for animals. Many neighbours have cats and they can hurt your adorable little pet, so you should protect it from them. Consequently, if there are any cats around you should always lock your hamster in its hamster cage, so that it would be safe.

Just as any other mammal hamsters need a daily supply of water. Most of the hamster cages have a water bottle system. In cages made of wire there is a little ball at the end of the nozzle so that the water doesn't flow free but comes out when the hamster is thirsty.

You can also buy little bows which can be used for feeding. They are put in the hamster cages and the pets can eat from them. There are several types of hamster food.

It is very important to keep your hamster fit as it needs regular exercises. You can help it by purchasing a small wheel that fits inside the hamster cages. This is how you will make sure your lovely pet will get some exercises when it is closed there. There are also such hamster cages which have plastic tubes which go through and around the cage. Their main purpose is to entertain the hamster and let it roam around its home.

Cleaning hamster cages is a very important task and should not be neglected for the well-being of both your little pet and yourself. To make it easy for cleaning, you can put a newspaper on the bottom of the hamster cage and also some wood chips. You just lift the paper and the wood chips out and replace them with new.

When living in a building where having animals is restricted taking a hamster might be just the way to have a pet. It is good for your children to have a pet like hamster as they will easily learn how to take care of a pet while playing and having fun with it.

Miami DolphinsThe New Bengals? Not Yet

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 04:53 AM CDT

With the arrest of Miami wide receiver Chris Chambers this past weekend, some might start to wonder if the Dolphins have evolved into Bengals over the off season. Chambers, a 2005 pro bowler and star of, ahem, my fantasy team, was picked up in North Carolina for driving while impaired, reckless driving, and speeding on July 14th. With the arrest, Chambers is now the third Dolphin to be taken into custody this year. If eight more Dolphins find themselves behind bars, they will pass the Cincinnati Bengals and lead the league in most (jail) yards gained.

Besides Chambers, Fred Evans, a defensive tackle with Miami, was arrested on June 23 for trespassing, resisting arrest with violence, disorderly conduct, and battery on a police officer. Joey Porter, the Steeler turned Dolphin, was arrested for a March conflict where he was accused of punching Levi Jones, an offensive lineman for the - go figure - Cincinnati Bengal. Porter was eventually charged with a misdemeanor.

So, there you have itare the Dolphins taking a page from the Bengals and - in lieu of evading sacks and tackles - focusing their time on evading the law? Well, not exactly.

To being with, this is a first offense for Chambers: before Saturday, his professional record was completely clean. He also - according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel - passed a breathalyzer test while at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police station. While he certainly shouldn't have been doing any kind of drinking and driving, he can chalk his arrest up to a mistakeand NEVER do it again.

Fred Evans offense, a violent crime, wasn't as benign, and this wasn't overlooked by the Dolphin's coaching staff. In the aftermath of his arrest, Evans found himself unemployed: Miami let him go. Cam Cameron, the head coach, released a statement saying, "We will not condone this type of behavior. I assure everyone it will be dealt with seriously." And seriously dealt with it was. Good for Cam for standing by his word, and his morals.

Joey Porter's arrest for hitting Levi Jones makes me think that neither party was innocent. When you have football players, packed with testosterone, and add the element of alcohol, these things will happen. Still, Porter is a bit of wild card and someone Cameron should keep an eye on. Porter has not only spat out accusations of cheating, (jokingly?) said he was going to give George Bush a piece of his mind, uttered homosexual slurs, and been voted one of the NFL's dirtiest players, but he also owned two dogs who killed his neighbors miniature horse. How, exactly, does that kind of thing happen?

Nonetheless, for now you can chalk Porter up to a talented player with a lot of passion (if not too much) who likes to run his mouth, and sometimes puts his foot in it. He's hardly the first NFL player to get in a fist fight and he won't be the last. Porter and Chamber don't quite deserve to be labeled Bengals just yet. As for Evans, well maybe Cincinnati has an opening.

Do Alternative Therapies Work For Pets?

Posted: 03 Jul 2008 03:38 AM CDT

Natural and holistic therapies are not new but even their use in humans has only recently gained popularity in the UK. More and more people are shunning traditional medicine not only for themselves but for their pets. According to Direct Line Insurance over 750 000 of the UK's dog owners use alternative or complimentary treatments - with 30% doing so on recommendation from their vet.

So, why have some of the oldest and most natural treatments only recently seen a revival and do they actually work?

Part of the answer is they never went away. Holistic treatments such as acupuncture and herbs are still the mainstream in many eastern countries such as China, inclusive of their pet population. It seems to be a predominantly Western attitude to have adopted traditional medicines as we know them. Some orthodox medics frowned on them as 'quack' methods, a seemingly odd approach as many of the pharmaceutical drugs available today are derived from plants - the basis for herbalism. However, they have stood the test of time and been documented throughout history, one of the oldest books of acupuncture in animals, is 'bo le zhen jing' (Boles Canon of Veterinary Acupuncture) an equine acupuncture book believed to have been written between 659B.C and 621B.C.), so is it likely they would still be mainstream in other cultures if they didn't work?

The main objection to natural therapies by most opposing doctors and vets, are that they are untested, unproven and unregulated. That may have been true once but now as more veterinarians are aware of the impact of modern life on pets and the need to treat the 'whole' not just the symptom, alternative therapies are being more widely used by those best able to judge their worth.

The limitations of orthodox medicine particularly with long standing conditions has caused some vets to look for alternatives and as a result it seems many are being more readily adopted as essential first point of calls rather than as solely 'complimentary'. - "Within months of qualifying in 1992, while still in Beeford, I was beginning to question the wisdom of conventional medicine. I could not help thinking, "Is that all there is to treat animals?" says Nick Thompson, a qualified vet from Bath, who uses herbs, acupuncture and homeopathy in both small and large animals.

Acupuncture - is already recognised by the American Veterinary Medical Association as suitable for the 'treatment of numerous conditions in animals' It also says 'Veterinary Acupuncture and acutherapy are now considered an integral part of veterinary medicine' (1)

It's very effective in managing pain and research in 1989 reported that out of 191 dogs with disc disease in their spines that out of those treated with acupuncture

* 85 dogs with only back pain - 94% recovered
* 37 dogs with back pain, lack of 'hind leg co-ordination and use' - 89% recovered
* 59 dogs with paralysis, unable to stand or walk or bear weight, but pain response present - 79% recovered
* 10 dogs with paralysis, unable to stand or walk or bear weight, and pain sensitivity absent - 20% recovered (2)

Homeopathy - is based on the concept 'like cures like'. Hippocrates is credited to be the first to use it in 400B.C.when he noted that herbs given in a low dose tended to cure symptoms that they created when given in a large dose. (Not unsimilar to modern day vaccination principles). There is very little research so far, but of the trials completed there is positive evidence for its use in kennel cough in dogs, Cushing's Disease in dogs and horses and in conditions found in other animals. A more dramatic use featured in the case of a Collie with ivermectin (a wormer) poisoning - his prognosis was poor - but the 'like cures like' principle was used and the vet gave a homeopathic dilution of the poison. The dog's condition improved rapidly and the dog recovered within a week. (3)

Herbs - have probably seen the greatest acceptance into conventional care. Their potency has been acknowledged by the National Office of Animal Health issuing license under its Controls of Animal Medicines to the Dorwest Herbs range. Before an animal medicine can be sold in the UK it must be approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate who must be satisfied that 'the product is safe, it works, and that it is of good quality'. The range of conditions treated is varied and includes epilepsy - given in conjunction with orthodox drugs, veterinary surgeons have found that it is possible to reduce the quantity of epileptic drugs required and thereby the side-effects often experienced.

In light of some of the startling results being seen in the veterinary profession, the objections that just because alternative medicines were seen as 'natural' did not mean they were safe, seems to have some ground.. Some herbs such as garlic, valerian and ginseng can cause problems such as bleeding and low blood sugars when a patient is given a general anaesthetic (4). With the potential to have undesirable effects, their adoption into mainstream veterinary care can only be seen as a positive move, even by their opponents. As research slowly catches up, whether it is undertaken by those who wish to disprove it as bunkum or those who want confirmation of its abilities the outcome can only be of help to our pets.
